How do dry scrubbers work?

These devices use gravitational, inertial and centrifugal forces to separate impurities from a gas stream. The air stream is slowed down, changed direction or put into a vortex motion, causing heavier particles to lose energy and fall out of the stream.

Types of mechanical dry separators

Inertial separators

They use the principle of changing the direction of gas flow. Specially shaped obstacles capture heavier particles that cannot follow the changed direction.

Lamella separators

They are mainly used to capture drops and larger impurities. They are often used in conjunction with wet scrubbers or in air conditioning systems behind water scrubbers.

Cyclone separators

The most common variant that uses centrifugal force. The air flow spins inside the device and the particles are carried to the walls, from where they fall into the collection container. This principle guarantees high efficiency even with large air volumes.
