Pneumatic Conveying - Efficient and Gentle Handling of Bulk Materials

Pneumatic conveying is an efficient method for transferring granular, crystalline, and powdered materials through a pipeline in which a gas – most commonly air – flows. The system uses the kinetic energy of the gas to carry material particles, enabling smooth and continuous transport even over long distances.

The conveyed material must be dry, non-sticky, with particle sizes up to 5 cm and a bulk density of up to 3,200 kg/m³. Depending on the material properties and operating requirements, a dilute phase can be selected for light materials or a dense phase for abrasive and heavier substances.

Conveying Principles

Dilute Phase

In this mode, the material is dispersed in the gas and fills the entire cross-section of the pipeline. The conveying velocity reaches approximately 20 m/s. It requires a higher volume of conveying gas and causes increased pipe wear, which is why it is mainly suitable for light materials.

Dense Phase

In this mode, the material moves slowly along the bottom of the pipeline and fills part or all of its volume. Thanks to the low conveying velocity (2–8 m/s), pipe wear is minimized, making this method ideal for abrasive or fragile materials.

Pneumatic Conveying Types

Vacuum (suction) Conveying

This system operates at a pressure lower than atmospheric (up to 50 kPa). The material is drawn in by a suction probe or feeder and can be collected from multiple points and conveyed to a single destination. It is suitable for short conveying distances and for materials that must not be released into the environment, such as toxic substances.

Pressure (blowing) Conveying

This system operates at a pressure higher than atmospheric (up to 1 MPa). The material is fed from a hopper into the conveying pipeline by a rotary feeder and carried by a stream of compressed air. It is suitable for non-toxic materials and allows conveying from one point to multiple destinations.
