Wet scrubbers

Wet scrubbers are designed to effectively capture even very fine particles with a size of less than 1 micrometer, which is a significant advantage over dry separators. Thanks to the use of water as a filter medium, they become an ideal solution for operations where it is necessary to safely separate sticky, abrasive or hot particles, and where there is an increased risk of explosion or fire.

Where are wet scrubbers used?

This technology is suitable where dry gas cleaning cannot be used at reasonable costs, and at the same time cooling or humidification of the flue gas stream is desired. Wet scrubbers are used in particular:

  • in operations with high concentrations of dust and hazardous particles,
  • in the processing of sticky and abrasive materials, especially where other applications fail and textile filters become clogged
  • in waste incinerators, where it is possible to remove gaseous pollutants simultaneously with dust using absorption methods

How do wet scrubbers work?

The principle of their operation is based on the intensive contact of flowing gases with water. The polluted gas stream is brought into contact with a finely atomized water curtain, spray or water bath, where the solid particles are moistened, captured and subsequently removed. The particles are attached to the water droplets, become heavier and are gravitationally discharged together with the water into the collection system. This process also reduces the temperature of the gases, which protects other technologies from overheating.

Advantages of wet scrubbers

  • Ability to capture particles smaller than 1 micrometer.
  • Effective separation of sticky, abrasive and hot particles.
  • Reduction of gas temperature during the cleaning process.
  • Possibility of simultaneous reduction of the concentration of gaseous pollutants by sorption methods.
  • Increased safety in operations with a risk of explosion.
Limitations and disadvantages

  • They can be sensitive to corrosion and the risk of freezing.
  • Not suitable for dusts that are poorly wettable or tend to cement.
  • Higher water consumption and greater pressure loss than dry separators.
